History
Though Florida is known for its citrus crops, citrus fruits are actually not native to the state. It is believed that Spanish settlers brought citrus from Europe and started the first crops.
The first-known inhabitants of the area currently known as Orange County, Florida were the Timucua Indians. Several idioms of the Timucuan language are known to have been spoken. As many as 200,000 Timucuans may have lived in the area before European settlers arrived. When these settlers moved into the region, they brought with them infectious diseases to which the Timucuan Indians had no immunity. The Timucuan population decreased to close to 1,000 by 1700. Owing to disease as well as to war with English settlers, the Timucuan tribe expired in the early 1800s.
As things progressed for the settlers, Mosquito County was formed, encompassing much of the area of present-day Central Florida. When Florida was granted statehood in 1845, Mosquito County was re-named Orange County, certainly a much more appealing name.
In the years following the Civil War, many people migrated to central Florida. It was inevitable that with its beautiful, lush, tropical landscape and warm climate, Florida would appeal to people far and wide. Tourism in Florida started booming as early as the 1800s, and has enjoyed continual success ever since.
